This section of my "Working with Tyler doc", focuses on behaviors, mindsets, and habits I want to improve. Doing this, helped me critically assess my progress towards the goals and expectations I've set for myself and others. It serves as a daily or weekly checkpoint that keeps my growth on track and transparently communicates my focus areas to colleagues. More importantly, it underscores my openness to feedback, which I particularly welcome as I strive to develop in these specific areas.
If you catch me doing any of these or see other opportunities, please let me know. You’ll be helping me grow and that is a giftI cherish and will work to return the favor with feedback for you.
1. Be the last…to speak and learn how to ask better questions. I often have an urge to jump in and solve the problem, this doesn’t give others much space to grow and learn. And if I do speak, I need to be better at understanding the problem first and then the solution. I can improve at getting as close to the root of the problem first, before I start suggesting solutions.
2. Show up…this is something I feel I will always have an opportunity to improve - based on the situation showing up could mean a variety of things. First and foremost, is giving my teammates and others full attention, understanding what they need, and acting upon that.
3. Be the change…there are times where I catch myself complaining or being resentful, in those moments, I want to be better at using these feelings as a trigger to act and be the change I or we as a team wish to see.
4. Help others be the best version of themselves - not your ideal version…a great team is the sum of many unique and talented parts working towards a common goal. I want to do a better job at getting to know our colleagues more (personally and professionally),it’ll help me understand what you value and what’s important to you. This way I can figure out how I can best help you. I want anyone on our team to be more hirable and valuable to a new team if they wish to leave, than when they started.
5. Being more concise when presenting, thinking about what is important in this moment, to this audience. Practice,Practice Practice…draft, edit, get feedback from others.
6. Better show the vision of Helix, balancing the need to work and plan for the immediate sprint / priorities with being able to think long term…AND then communicate that vision with our team to get input and feedback more often.
