I'd like to start a short weekly series about my experience and results of creating a "Working with Tyler doc". In the past 6 months, I've been reading and listening to many leaders across the software product industry talk about the value of creating a “working with me document”. After delaying it multiple times, I sat down one night and just started writing. Pulling together notes, principles, views, and advice I've gotten from others - I took a template from online and plugged in my info.
I have to say, even if I never shared the document with any co-workers, it was a great experience. I was forced to think through my values, what I'm working on, how I'd like to interact with others, and more. Now I have something I can go back to and check-in with every week, month or year to see how I'm evolving, where I'm falling short, and what else I have to work on...something that will always have a pie in the oven.
So here it goes, in a series of Blog posts I'll share my Working with me doc.
Here's my intro:
I'm writing this doc with the intention of helping me and you. I see it as a way to hold myself accountable by openly sharing with others. I hope it helps make our relationships stronger, our teams work more fulfilling, and provides another avenue for us to grow together. I know that journey of growth will never end, and I'm excited to be on this ride with you!
My goal is that this document provides you with a better understanding of what's important to me, how I think, what I commit to you & expect from you, things I'm working on, and my approach to "work/life balance”. Most of it is a collection of things I've experienced or heard along the way...with my own twist. It's also a living, breathing document, which ideally has many improvements over time...ideally, I look back and say "did I really think that?!".
Coming next...my expectations for myself and others...
Until next time,
T
